Global Distribution, Public Health and Clinical Impact of the Protozoan Pathogen Cryptosporidium
Cryptosporidium spp. are coccidians, oocysts-forming apicomplexan protozoa, which complete their life cycle both in humans and animals, through zoonotic and anthroponotic transmission, causing cryptosporidiosis. The global burden of this disease is still underascertained, due to a conundrum transmission modality, only partially unveiled, and on a plethora of detection systems still inadequate o...
متن کاملSubstance P expression correlates with severity of diarrhea in cryptosporidiosis.
Cryptosporidiosis, caused by Cryptosporidium parvum, is self-limited in immunocompetent hosts but may cause chronic diarrhea in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Substance P (SP), a neuropeptide belonging to the tachykinin family, is expressed in gastrointestinal tract and can cause electrogenic chloride anion secretion. Therefore, we studied SP mRNA and protein expressio...
متن کاملPresent and Future Control of Cryptosporidiosis in Cattle
Cryptosporidiosis continues to be a problem for dairy calves and a perplexing public health risk, despite recent advances in molecular biology that have contributed to our knowledge of the pathobiology of the causative organism. Cryptosporidium infects at least 155 mammals, including humans and dairy cattle, primarily resulting in diarrhea. Unfortunately, the somewhat unique lifecycle of this p...

Despite the fact that Cryptosporidium was identified 1100 years ago, the first human cases were only reported in 1976, and only a handful of cases were diagnosed before the discovery in 1982 of Cryptosporidium as a major cause of diarrhea in patients with AIDS [1]. During the next 5 years, Cryptosporidium was recognized as an important cause of waterborne episodes of diarrhea, childhood diarrhe...
متن کاملCryptosporidiosis: An under-recognized public health problem
Cryptosporidium spp. is under recognized as an important pathogen causing diarrhea in children and HIV-infected individuals with associated high morbidity and mortality. In endemic areas, most symptomatic infections are in childhood and in immunocompromised adults. The immune status of the host plays a critical role in determining the severity of cryptosporidiosis. Infection is self-limited in ...
